Beginner Aikido can be an exciting time. If you’ve been dreaming about being a martial artist for a long time - here you are! Beginners learn to roll on the ground and to fall safely. Beginners learn foundational technique that are the basis for this style of Aikido. Remember that you are needed. Without new students the dojo can stagnate. It is important to have new members. So, Welcome!
Once you make it through the Beginner period and take your first and second orange belt tests it is on to intermediate study. This period is marked by confidence. Now Aikido is fun and exhilarating. You are enjoying the rewards and realizing you can achieve perfection for where you are in the Aikido Life Cycle but not be perfect, yet. You can do so many things now! The only thing to be done is to keep doing it. The only way we get better is by repetition. There really are no protégés in Aikido. It is all a matter of class hours. You are among a select few who stick with something! See you next class!
By the point you have reached advanced Aikido, you have learned an important concept - patience! The tests are further and further apart, from months, to a year, then even years! Our Sensei tells us that we must continue to strive even though our growth will be slower and slower, but more consequential. There is still actually more to learn. Growth is more difficult, but it’s important to continue to strive. At this point, you may well be on your way to becoming a “lifer”
